Feasibility study of Padma Bridge to be completed by Feb 2005


Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Technical Cooperation Programme of the government Japan has started implementation of the Feasibility Study of Padma Bridge. The Study will be completed by February 2005.
It is learnt that the team has targets four sites for the construction of the bridge. These are; Goalonda-Sibalya, Faridpur-Nayabari, Mawa-Char Janazat and Chandpur-Vedarganj.
In this connection, a Minutes of Meeting ( MM) on the inception report of the study was signed in the city yesterday between the JICA Advisory Team and Economic Relations Division (ERD), co-signed by the Ministry of Communication and Jamuna Multi-purpose Bridge Authority.
Dr Yozo Fuji, leader of the JICA Advisory Team and Aminul Islam Bhuiyan, Joint Secretary, ERD signed the MM on behalf of their respective side.
Meanwhile, the first batch of the 26-member JICA Study Team, which has already arrived in Bangladesh. embarks on the study in ful-scale following signing of the Minutes of the Meeting. The study is scheduled to be completed in 22 months.
As per the scope of work, since Padma Bridge is studied mainly for road traffic, feasibility of "loading transmission lines for electric power, telecommunications and natural gas will be considered as additional load factors. The river crossing point, which itself is a part of the study, shall be selected with due consideration of the long term stability of the river course, the embankments and foundations of Padma Bridge and to give maximum benefit to the country.
The study will also consider socio-economic impacts of Padma Bridge within Bangladesh and the region. Padma Bridge, when completed, will become one of the most important bridges in Bangladesh to integrate the central and southwest regions of the country. It will also likely bear a substantial role for socio-economic development of the northern parts of South Asia, including neighbouring countries.
ERD sources said that major objectives of the study were, to conduct a feasibility study on the new bridge construction over the Padma River, and to pursue technology transfer in course of implementation of the study.
JICA Headquarters had dispatched a Study Team of 26 members and an Advisory Team of 6 members to Bangladesh for conducting the Study, ERD sources informed.
The study will cover the area proposed for the new bridge construction and associated regions. The socio-economic impact of bridge construction on Bangladesh due to cross border traffic to from neighbouring countries will also be studied.
Padma Bridge at Mawa point demanded

Representatives of the Padma Bridge Implementation Committee at a meeting on Sunday at its Bijoynagar office demanded the construction of Padma Bridge at Mawa point.
Chaired by former additional IG Md Abdur Rahim Khan, the meeting said an unbelievable change would come to the lives of five crore people of southwestern part of the country if the bridge is built at Mawa point.

A 101-member strong national committee of the organization was formed at the meeting with former additional IG Md Abdur Rahim Khan as president and SM Harun as Secretary General. Former parliament member Alhajj Monirul Islam Manik was made chief coordinator at the meeting.

The meeting was attended, among others, by former additional secretary and member of public service commission Sirajuddin Ahmed, former joint secretary M Shamsul Haq, Iqbal Hossain Forkan, Adv M Azizur Rahman Manik, Bazlur Rahman Mia, Md Shamim Hasan, SM Harun, Adv Delwar Hossain Sharif, ABM Mohiuddin Khan Chowdhury and Kazi Shahinul Islam.
