IDEB Suggests new sites for Padma Bridge

By BSS, Faridpur
Aug 9, 2003, 03:02

When opinions of millions are divided over the site
for construction of the proposed Padma Bridge, the
Faridpur chapter of Institute of Diploma Engineers
of Bangladesh (IDEB) has suggested a newer site
for the same.

IDEB, Faridpur, in a press release, said construction
of the bridge at Kartikpur of Dohar Upazila under Dhaka
district at one end and at Gopalpur of Charbhadrasan
Upazila of Faridpur district the other, would minimise
distance, fuel cost and save time in direct road
communication between southern region and the capital.
This route via Buriganga Bridges No. 1 and 2 is already
in service over the Padma River.

Moreover, Roads and Highways Department recently
decided to introduce ferry service between Kartikpur
and Gopalpur Ghat to make an easy alternative road
connection between the capital and southern region
besides the existing Paturia and Mawa route.

The IDEB, in the press release, said if the proposed
bridge is constructed at Kartikpur-Gopalpur point
the distance from capital to Faridpur will be reduced
to 72 kms from 132 kms, Jessore 65 kms from 222 kms,
Khulna 227 kms from 284 kms, Barisal 196 kms from
277 kms, Khushtia 220 kms from 277 and Rajbari 115
kms from 136 kms.

Moreover, time will be saved by at least one hour to
any destination from the capital. It further added that
a decrease in the transport fair by 30% and would
also save Taka 20 crore annually in foreign currency
as fuel cost.

According to water experts, if the proposed bridge is
constructed at Gopalpur-Kartikpur point the river training
scheme for the bridge would help check erosion in the
upstream of the Padma covering Faridpur town and
Haziganj where severe erosion takes place every year.
In that case no separate measure will be needed by the
concerned authorities to check erosion saving huge money
for the purpose, they added. It may be mentioned here that the Gopalpur Ghat is located 10 kms down stream of Padma from Faridpur town.

Meanwhile, people of this area have hailed this new proposal of IDEB and urged the government to make an unbiased and impartial study on it

Padma Bridge at Daulatdia pleaded

By BSS, Dhaka
May 27, 2003

Speakers at a seminar on Tuesday strongly suggested that Paturia-Daulatdia was the ideal site for construction of the Padma Bridge.
“Daulatdia site is technically and economically the only viable site to construct the Bridge,”they said at a seminar at CIRDAP here.

Organised by Daulatdia Padma Bridge Implementation Parishad, the seminar was chaired by former ambassador and adviser to the BNP chairperson M.M. Rezaul Karim. Among others, Vice Chancellor of South East University Shamsher Ali and the general secretary of Bangladesh economic association, Abul Barakat.

Mr. Nurul Alam read out the key-note paper in the seminar. Eminent persons from Faridpur, Rajbari, Gopalganj, Manikganj, greater Khulna, Jessore and Kushtia participated in open discussion.

Mr. Rezaul Karim said that a primary survey was conducted at Maowa for the construction of the Padma Bridge during the rule of previous government intentionally. He said a Japanese delegation has been working now to select a site for construction of the Padma Bridge. He said the reality of the construction of the bridge at Daulatdia would come out when the delegation conducts a neutral ‘feasibility test’.

Prof. Shamsher Ali said that Padma Bridge could be constructed at the Daulatdia site with half of the cost at Maowa. He said employment opportunity for lot of people would be created if the Bridge were constructed at this point.

Dr. Abul Barakat said that eight kilometre bridge has to be built in Maowa while it would be only 3.5 kilometre in Daulatdia. He further pointed out that taka 5,015 crore would be spent for construction work at Daulatdia which could be collected from toll in 10 years. On the other hand, he said, the construction work at Maowa would cost taka 10,676 crore and would take 100 years through toll collection. He said there was no option but to select Daulatdia site to establish railway link with the Padma Bridge.

Mr. Nurul Alam said there were highway and railway infrastructures on the Paturi-Daulatdia site. “On the other hand setting up of railway line was not possible at Maowa,” he added.

Mr. Habibur Rahman said, as per technical surveys Daulatdia is the right place for construction of the Padma Bridge.
